Waterford Castle Wedding | Ian & Tori’s Sun-Soaked Summer Celebration

A Waterford Castle Wedding Built on Presence, Film & Full Energy

Ian and Tori’s Waterford Castle wedding unfolded on one of those balmy June evenings where you simply don’t need a jacket. The day began bright and sunny, softened slightly by passing cloud later on, but it never threatened rain. It didn’t need dramatic skies. The warmth in the air carried everything.

This was a destination wedding in Waterford, with Ian from New York, Tori from Toronto, now based in Texas. Friends and family travelled serious distances to be there. Around 100 adults and 23 children gathered on the island. And from the very beginning, the tone was clear. This wasn’t going to be stiff. It wasn’t going to be over-managed. It was going to be lived.

They had originally planned a 2020 wedding. Five years later, perspective changes. Priorities sharpen. Tori said it plainly. The priority was love between them, and helping guests pause and feel the love in their own lives. That intention ran quietly through the entire Waterford Castle celebration.

Getting Ready Together at This Waterford Castle Wedding

The day didn’t start with separation. It started with proximity.

Tori and Ian got ready together in the Presidential Suite at Waterford Castle. That’s rare. It only happens once or twice a year. And it always shifts the atmosphere. No performance. No grand reveal choreography. Just two people moving around the same space, adjusting cufflinks, tying ribbons, managing two small boys, Otis and Maxwell, who were very much part of the morning.

The skylight in the bathroom cracked open the room with beautiful directional light. I shot heavily on film that morning, as requested. Bright sunshine and film are a dream combination, and the white suit Ian wore bloomed perfectly on 35mm. Crisp but soft at the edges. He paired it with pink Docs. Bold. Relaxed. Entirely him.

Tori wore her grandmother’s pearls. No professional hair or makeup team. She did it herself. That detail alone tells you everything about the tone of this wedding at Waterford Castle.

They’d spoken before about doing two dress changes for portraits. In reality, we barely got five minutes under the oak tree before the ceremony. And that was enough. Weddings compress. Family, children, nerves. You adapt. We kept it clean and simple.

The Waterford Castle Wedding Ceremony on the Lower Lawn

The ceremony took place on the lower lawn of Waterford Castle. It’s a position I love because it allows me to stay well out of the way while still anchoring the castle architecture in the frame.

Tori’s brother officiated the ceremony. A natural. Gift of the gab. He had the entire crowd leaning in, laughing one second and emotional the next. There’s a difference between reading a script and owning a room. He owned it.

The Castle String Quartet provided the music. It felt grounded, elegant but not overly formal.

Immediately after the ceremony, on the upper lawn, there was a moment that will stay with me. The four of them. Ian, Tori, Otis and Maxwell. Just came together. No posing. No direction. Pure euphoria. It lasted seconds. It was everything.

That’s the type of moment couples don’t see happening. That’s why documentary coverage matters.

Portraits During This Waterford Castle Wedding (Without Leaving the Party)

Portraits happened minutes before the ceremony. Literally minutes. As people were lining up.

And again, briefly, under the oak tree.

We never made it to the avenue. There simply wasn’t time. But it didn’t matter. The drinks reception was long, generous, and filled with space. So instead of disappearing for forty minutes, we built small connections throughout the afternoon.

Guests wanted portraits. They were relaxed. Film cameras were everywhere. It felt like the 90s in the best possible way. The energy was organic. No one felt dragged away. The formal photographs didn’t feel formal.

Family portraits were taken to the shaded side of the castle. Efficient. Calm. Grandparents present and fully involved. On the dance floor later too, which always says something about the tone of a wedding at Waterford Castle.

Film, Irish Dancing & A Waterford Castle Wedding Party That Delivered

I shot film heavily throughout this Waterford Castle marriage ceremony and reception. And I can say confidently now, bright summer light is where film performs at its best. It rewarded us all day.

The drinks reception felt like people were on holiday. Spread across the lawn. No tension. No rush. They stayed present.

Then came the Irish dancing.

Completely unannounced to me. I had no idea. Tori’s siblings emerged one by one in full costume from the Castle doors. The reaction was electric. Because I hadn’t prepped for it, I simply followed the energy. Sometimes not knowing is the best thing that can happen.

DJ Paudy Walsh was excellent, but truthfully, the guests did half his job for him. They arrived ready. They’d travelled far. They weren’t holding back. This was a full-on party.

As Tori later wrote:

“Shane. Actual real tears when looking at those photos. Thank you.”

And earlier:

“You captured so many special moments… we are so lucky to have had you there.”

That generosity of spirit tends to reflect itself back in the images.

A Summer Waterford Castle Wedding That Stayed True to Itself

There was no overthinking this wedding. No obsession with perfection. Just presence.

Cake was cut informally. Speeches happened without drama. The final song of the night slowed everything down enough for one last quiet embrace.

They had asked for a candid approach. They trusted the creative process. They embraced film. They stayed in the party.

And it shows.

If you’re planning your own Waterford Castle wedding, especially as an international couple considering Ireland, the best advice is simple. Don’t overproduce it. Let it unfold. The castle does the heavy lifting. The rest is energy.
