Colour in Modern Wedding Photography: My Take on Trends, Timelessness, and a Little Bit of Fun

My Honest Take on Colour in Today’s Wedding Photography

Let’s talk about colour. Specifically, the kind you see in modern wedding photographs. You know what? It’s a topic that’s surprisingly personal, and, honestly, a little bit fraught. I’m a creative person at heart, and I love playing with images, lighting, and colour. But in the wedding industry, where fads and styles seem to pop up and vanish faster than you can say “Pinterest board,” colour choices can get complicated.

The Whims of Fashion: Why Trends Age Your Photos

Here’s the thing: trends are fun. They’re exciting, and they make your photos feel fresh and current. But they’re also a bit like that outfit you wore at sixteen, remember thinking it was the coolest thing ever? Or maybe that haircut you rocked in your twenties, convinced you’d never look back? Well, you did look back, and let’s be honest, it didn’t always age gracefully.

Wedding photography is a lot like that. Styles come and go, and what’s “in” today might look a little dated tomorrow. It’s a balancing act. Being modern and on-trend, but also making sure your photos don’t end up as relics of a particular moment in time.

My Approach: True to Life Colour Batch

So, what’s my solution? Every client I work with gets a suite of images I call the True-to-Life Colour batch. These are edited to look sharp, crisp, and clean. Think perfect skin tones, correct exposure, and nothing distracting. It’s the kind of photo that, much like a quick snap on your phone, shows you what you actually saw.

But there’s more to it than meets the eye. These images are captured with a technical precision that’s easy to overlook. There’s a lot of professional know-how behind getting them just right. The goal? To give you a set of images that will always age well. If you’re thinking about printing family photos to hang on the wall, this is the batch I’d recommend every time.

The Emotional Power of Black and White Slideshows

Now, let’s switch gears for a second. Every client gets a slideshow, usually in black and white. I’ve been doing this for years, and I’ll tell you why: there’s something powerful about seeing your wedding photos for the first time, all together, in a format you can sit down and watch with your loved ones. It’s a shared experience, and honestly, it’s lovely. There’s a kind of magic in black and white that strips away distractions and lets the emotion shine through.

Preview Galleries: A Splash of Contemporary Colour

But I don’t stop there. Lately, I’ve started giving clients a preview gallery of about 300 images, which I consider to be the best from the wedding day, including portraits. Here’s where I have a little fun: the photos aren’t in chronological order. It’s a bit unconventional, but it works. It keeps things fresh and engaging.

For these previews, I use contemporary colour presets. Think of them as the “film stock” looks that are all the rage right now. They’re cool, they’re trendy, and they’re perfect for sharing on Instagram or other socials soon after the wedding. These looks tend to last about six months, sometimes longer, depending on the style. And if you have a particular colour vibe you love, I’m happy to work with you before the wedding to get as close as possible to your favourite presets.

Wrapping Up: Striking the Balance: Timeless and Trendy Wedding Photos

To sum it up, every client gets a set of images edited in a simple, natural colour palette to ensure they age well. At the same time, I offer a splash of contemporary colour for those moments when you want to show off your wedding in all its modern glory.

It’s all about balance. Capturing the excitement of the present, while making sure your memories stand the test of time. Because, let’s face it, nobody wants to look back in twenty years and wonder what they were thinking. And if you do, well, at least you’ll have a set of photos that still look as good as the day they were taken.
