A Black Tie Winter Wedding at Dromoland Castle | Ava & Conor

Ava & Conor’s Dromoland Castle Wedding

Ava Cronley and Conor McElduff celebrated their wedding at Dromoland Castle, one of Ireland’s most recognisable castle venues. Their day combined a relaxed documentary approach with a classic black tie atmosphere, and it turned into a celebration that was both elegant and wonderfully easygoing.

The couple had one very clear priority from the start. They wanted their photographs to feel candid, natural and full of personality. No stiff posing. No disappearing for long portrait sessions. Just real moments, laughter, and the people who mattered most to them.

In many ways, the day’s structure reflected that decision.

Getting Married Twice in 24 Hours

Ava and Conor actually got married the day before the celebration.

On Friday afternoon in Ennis, they held a small legal ceremony with close family to complete the official paperwork. The following day, Saturday, was the celebration everyone had travelled for. Friends and family gathered at Dromoland Castle, where Fr Albert Macdonald of Ennis led a relaxed blessing ceremony.

This approach suited them perfectly. It allowed the Saturday ceremony to feel calm and personal, focused on the day’s meaning rather than its formalities.

The ceremony itself took place in the Terrace Room at Dromoland Castle, with music provided by the Munster String Quartet, whose playing filled the room beautifully as guests arrived.

A Black Tie Atmosphere in the Castle

The couple chose a black tie dress code, which worked perfectly with the setting. Dromoland’s interiors already have a timeless quality. Tall windows, historic staircases, antique rooms. With candles lit throughout the evening spaces, the whole atmosphere felt warm and intimate despite the winter date.

A January wedding in Ireland always means keeping a close eye on the weather. The morning began with rain, but the kind of rain that feels temporary rather than stubborn.

As often happens in winter, the day eventually opened up.

And when it did, the light was extraordinary.

The First Look at Dromoland Castle

One of Ava and Conor’s key decisions was to see each other before the ceremony.

This allowed us to complete the family photographs early and meant they could enjoy the drinks reception without feeling pulled away for portraits later.

Their first look happened inside the castle near one of the staircases, where the soft winter light coming through the windows created a calm and quiet moment before the day properly began.

After that, we moved straight into the family photographs with both sets of parents.

Ava’s parents, Catherine and John, were there, along with Conor’s parents, Deirdre and Brian, and the rest of the immediate families. Because everything happened before the ceremony, the group photographs felt relaxed rather than rushed.

Once those were finished, Ava and Conor had the freedom to simply enjoy the rest of the day.

A Winter Wedding and a Surprise Break in the Weather

When the rain finally stopped, we made a quick decision.

Dromoland Castle has beautiful grounds, but winter weddings rarely leave much time to explore them. However, the light that afternoon was too good to ignore.

We jumped into one of the golf buggies and headed across the grounds to the far side of the lake.

From there, you get an incredible view back toward the castle. I had never photographed from that exact spot before, but it turned out to be one of those rare locations where everything aligns perfectly. The water, the landscape and the castle sitting behind them in the distance.

The light had that soft winter quality that photographers quietly hope for.

Those portraits became some of the defining images of the day.

Ceremony in the Terrace Room

Guests gathered in the Terrace Room at Dromoland Castle, where Fr Albert Macdonald led a ceremony that felt warm, relaxed and very personal.

Rather than a long traditional mass, the couple opted for something simpler.

Several relatives spoke during the ceremony, sharing reflections about marriage from different stages of life. Some had only recently married, while others had years of experience and children of their own. It added a lovely sense of perspective to the moment.

Meanwhile, the Munster String Quartet created the atmosphere throughout, their music carrying softly through the room as the ceremony unfolded.

Drinks Reception Without Disappearing

Because portraits and family photographs were already finished, Ava and Conor were free to spend the drinks reception exactly how they wanted.

With their guests.

This was something they had spoken about early in the planning stage. They didn’t want to miss that part of the day. For many couples, it becomes one of the most enjoyable moments, when everyone is relaxed, greeting each other, laughing and sharing stories.

From a documentary point of view, it is also where people’s real personalities tend to come out.

There was plenty of that here.

Friends catching up, cousins laughing together, and a steady stream of small moments happening naturally around the castle rooms.

Speeches, Candles and a Warm Winter Atmosphere

Dinner followed later in the evening, and the speeches turned out to be one of the highlights of the day.

They were short, heartfelt and genuinely funny.

As the evening progressed the castle rooms filled with candlelight, creating a soft atmosphere that worked beautifully for photographs. It’s one of the things winter weddings can do particularly well. Instead of bright summer light, the mood shifts toward something more intimate.

The band Spring Break took over later in the evening and the dance floor filled quickly.

A Relaxed Day Full of Personality

Throughout the day Ava and Conor kept coming back to the same idea.

They wanted the photographs to show the real personalities of the people around them.

The laughs. The chats. The “messing”, as Ava later described it.

That kind of energy is often what makes a wedding feel memorable long after the day itself has passed.

What the Couple Said Afterwards

When Ava and Conor watched their slideshow with both of their families a few days after the wedding, the reaction was exactly what they had hoped for.

“There was lots of tears and laughter with the photos. Everyone looks so excited and happy but you also captured the love and calm on the day too.”
— Ava Cronley

They also sent a message a little later that perfectly summed up the atmosphere of the day.

“Shane, thank you so so much for making our day so special, fun and relaxed! You made everyone feel so comfortable and honestly made the day. The laughs, chats and messing was great.”
— Ava Cronley

And perhaps the most unexpected compliment came from Ava’s maid of honour.

“My maid of honour, Olive who is getting married is raging that she already put a deposit down for someone else and was trying to figure out if she could change it after meeting you!”
— Ava Cronley
