Castle Durrow Wedding, Clough Church, Co Laois, photography by Shane O’Neill

A few classic reportage shots from the wedding of Eva & Keith married in Castle Durrow & Clough Church during the summer. Full marks for choice of venues.

BELOW: I left a camera with a fisheye lens up on the balcony to capture a dramatic shot of the bride walking up the aisle. The shutter was set up to trip eery 5 seconds, meaning i didn’t have to worry about doing it manually. If you look closely you can see me in the aisle.

waterford castle wedding - photography by Shane O’Neill, Aspect Photography

Plenty of atmosphere at Waterford Castle - shot over Christmas. My “mainly documentary” approach is complimented by “something artistic” - some of these shots below fall into the latter category and took about 3 minutes to capture. The rest of them capture the unique atmosphere of Waterford Castle in winter time.

Frankie Walsh with Liam McCarthy after 50 years - Aspect Photography by Waterford Photographer Shane O’Neill

I had the priviledge of photographing Frankie Walsh, the 1959 Waterford Senior Hurling Captain just before Christmas. He was reunited with the Liam McCarthy Cup (which we sorely had to borrow from Kilkenny for the shoot) on the grounds of Walsh Park to promote a new documentary released by Kevin Casey at WLRFM. Frankie could probably still play Championship Hurling today such is his vigour and fitness. A true living legend.

Coumshingaun

Recently took a trip to Coumshingaun, a glacial or corrie lake set in the Comeragh Mountains, Waterford hoping it had frozen over in the prolonged cold spell we are experiencing in Ireland right now. It wasn’t frozen unfortunately but still well worth the trip. A pond just before the lake itself was almost completely iced over. Here are some of the images I got …

2010 Resolution

New Year - new resolution. This year mine is to update this blog with plenty of interesting and thoughtful images. Here is a shot I’ve been mad to get for years: a long exposure with remotely tripped camera mounted to the bonnet of the car with suction cups travelling down Gladstone St with the Christmas lights overhead captured using a fisheye lens. I can see now why it too so long! Probably should have washed the car first. Here’s to not breaking resolutions .. for once!

the real start of Christmas in Waterford

To many Waterford people the real start of the festive season in begins with the launch of the WLR FM Lions Club Hamper Appeal. This year it opened on the 12th of December with Bell X1 playing a 30 minute set on John Roberts Square (images to follow) However it was Christmas in the Cathederal that always attracts a large audience. A large orchestra and several choirs gather under the direction of maestro, Kevin O’Carroll with Billy McCarthy, compere, it’s always spectacular to shoot. Here are a few images ..

Wedding Johnstown Castle Co Wexford

Niamh & David’s driver could not have been more helpful. As we made our way around the grounds of the spectacular Johnstown Castle in Co Wexford he enthusiastically pointed out the locations where photographs are always taken. This was great information, I knew now where NOT to shoot. A reconnaissance mission before unearthed a disused greenhouse. Ideal. The driver had raised eyebrows - litmus paper indicating we were onto something.

an afternoon with john cooper clarke

The legendary “Bard of Salford” was in town on Thursday to perform as part of the Imagine Arts Festival. I made a call on the off chance that he was free for a few shots in the afternoon. He was and kindly agreed. What was supposed to be a quick 30 minute shoot turned into 3hrs! John was as generous with his stories as he was with his time. He talked about everything from Ian Curtis & his favourite band The New York Dolls to his gratitude to Alex Turner, whom he attributes to his current popularity. Throw in a few random poems and curious onlookers who thought I was photographing Ronnie Wood - it’s an afternoon I won’t forget in a hurry. Big thanks to Sinead Flynn and Ollie Breslin for organising it all.

UPDATE: nice to see I made the FWA One Photo a Day with one of the above shots http://www.fwaphoto.com/#/2009-11-16/

Hook Head Wedding

Although the majority of my approach to wedding photography is documentary, I do like to pick up an artisitic image for clients too. Something that is not going to take all day to capture, an image that could be put onto canvas later on. To get this shot you really can only go as far as a client is willing to go. Even though I would happily go to extremes, I would never insist on anything too intensive. The client has the final say. In this case, Danny & Bernie opted to go off the beaten track (well, Danny had to be dragged!) in the pursuit of something a little specatuclar, in this case Hook Head.

Hook Head itself is not too difficult to get to. You can pretty much drive right up to it. My favourite location to shoot there is east of the lighthouse, looking back along a small inlet. It takes about 5 minutes to get there across rocks in normal clothes. Add about another 3 minutes for anyone wearing a wedding dress! It was cold and windy. So cold that my hands were numb. It would have been easy to ditch the idea and get back to comfort of the car but the lads were happy to continue. Was it worth it? Decide for yourself, here is what we got  …..
